29 February

I’ve only known one person whose birthday falls on this unique date – Sister Germaine Angkangon.
I remember her once saying that she consider 28th Feb a poor substitute and only 29th is considered her real birthday hehe… So on this special day I hunted her handphone number and gave her a surprise call. In her trademark serious teacher voice *but in a whisper cos she was queuing up in a bank* she answered with a gruff “Hello,”.
“Is this the birthday girl?”
“Yes. Who is this?” still very serious sounding and intimidating even through the phone.
“Oh this is your ex-student. Am I calling you at a wrong time?”
“Yes, I’m at the bank.” Was the curt reply.
“Errrr sorry sister. Ok, just wanna wish you a very Happy Birthday ya. Florence here.”
Somehow, my name must have ring a bell. Cause from then onward Sister G forgot to lower her voice and boisterous laughter *LOL*
It was wonderful getting to wish her coz if I missed today, I’d have to wait another FOUR years to do so hehe… Catching up with her brought many fond memories of my high school days… ah those care-free days…
Sister G was our vice principal in Stella Maris. She’s got such humongous charisma that our principal would request for her to "...please just stand outside the teacher’s room balcony awhile..." to render all noisy classrooms to be as silent as a church :-)
Strict as she was, she was much respected, and how can we forget her many great and funny anecdotes?
Well Sister G, if you’re reading this… Happy Birthday to you and Happy Retirement too!
Guess we’ll be seeing more of you in KK now hehe (Sister G was the much loved principal of SM St Anne Labuan before her retirement on the eve of her birthday).
